Anyone who knows me knows that I think the fusion of dessert and alcohol is like the most brilliant collaboration ever. Doesn't liquor infused whipped cream sound like a GREAT idea? Like why hasn't someone done this yet? Oh but they have! Whipped Lightning is the "world's first alcohol-infused whipped cream." With flavors like Amaretto Whipahol and Strawberry Colada Whipahol, this fun find is not for the kiddies. It is 36.5 proof with over 15% alc/vol. Whether it's used to top a dessert, cocktail or hot beverage, this sounds like the perfect bonus to a sweet treat.
Can you handle another twist? Pinnacle Vodka has a whipped cream flavored vodka. Wait a minute! I just discovered a Chocolate Whipped flavor. Shut the front door!
Needless to say that these are both at the top of my todo list!
With my new dedication to diversifying my diet, I've been researching foods to enhance my nutritional intake. I'd been craving lentil soup for quite a while now, and it wasn't until my friend told me that lentils are a good source of iron that it made sense. I am anemic, and every so often I have strong cravings for burgers, but this time was an interesting twist.
On a chilly day in New York City, I found the perfect answer to both the cold weather and my craving. On 55th and 8th I discovered The Original SoupMan who did in fact have lentil soup. For exactly $5 I got my soup, a piece of bread, an apple, and a Lindt Chocolate for dessert. It was like the perfect snack pack, and I was just as happy as I used to be when I had a lunchables in my lunchbox.
I will also be attempting to make a corn soup for the holidays. I'll report the results if it goes well.
Now that I'm obsessed with HGTV and this room transformation project, I've come across some really interesting things. Recently on HGTV, I discovered the idea of using letter decals to decorate walls. I've always loved words. So I immediately loved this idea. I've seen the decals at WalMart, Target and at HomeGoods. The one I liked most were mirror decals (these at Target are $19.99, and I got them at HomeGoods for $9.99). I got some fun words like "dream" "imagine" and shapes that I've been drawn to like butterflies and hummingbirds. I can't wait to put them up.
If it's one thing I've learned about Minnesotans, it's that they cherish the summer and as a whole do what they can to savor every moment of it. Dealing with temperatures that make a New Yorker like me shiver from just the thought, who can blame them? During my first trip to Minneapolis, I took note of how many bikers shared the road with the vehicles. What I observed is that bike riding is more than a recreational activity, it is a means of transportation, and a popular one at that. Did you know that "Minneapolis is ranked 2nd in the nation for the number of people who commute to work by bicycle"? I didn't until I read this.
During this second visit, I discovered something even more exciting. Captivated by the bright green and pretty blue bikes all in row, I stumbled upon Nice Ride Minnesota, a bike sharing system. With 60 locations throughout Minneapolis, Nice Ride MN makes most trips seem like just hop, skip, and a pedal away. For a 24-hour subscription price of $5 (plus trip fees), the bike is yours. If your trip is less than 30 minutes, there is no fee. From my experience of walking from the U (University of Minnesota) to Uptown Minneapolis, it seems that many destinations can be reached in less than 30 minutes by bike. Then you can check out another one to ride back home. Depending on the details of your trip, this option can beat the cost of bus fare, a cab ride or even gas money.
As simple as it may seem, I was so impressed by it because it is such a good idea. Like other bike sharing systems throughout the country, Bike Ride MN is cool in so many positive ways. Not only will it help with traffic but it can have positive effects on physical health and fitness (and they say as much in their Vision).
Because Bike Ride MN has only been on the streets since June, there are still many questions surrounding it. The Bike Ride website provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions. The local Fox 9 News also shared information about the new system:
Whether it be a means of a transportation, exercise, just for fun, or out of curiosity, Nice Ride certainly seems worth a trip.
I was recently introduced to the Diner's Deck and thought it was something worth sharing. Native New Yorkers and visitors alike can find value in this deck of cards. 52 cards, each offering a discount to an NYC restaurant, is a great way to tackle the endless dining options NY has to offer. There is also a Bar & Lounge Deck and a Brooklyn Deck.
If you play your cards right, I'll share some more fun finds. ;-)
